China Travel Checklist (This list is provided as a guide only) |

[ ] Get started on your passport or passport renewal and immunizations. Passports may take up to six weeks during peak travel months and some immunizations are given in a series over a period of week or months. Make an appointment with your health provider to discuss how any health issues or medications you are taking may be impacted by your trip. Take an ample supply of your medications with you and a letter from your health provider listing your prescription medications. Take a list of the recommended immunizations for your destination to your health provider to use as a reference. [ ] Contact your travel agent to book your flight. Do this as soon as possible because international flights book quickly. [ ] Contact your tour agent for your China travel, touring and accomodations. It is important to use a Chinese tour agent (see visa requirements). [ ] Got those started? Ok, why not check the current travel advisories at the US Dept. of State. Also, this is a great time to dig into the China culture, customs and maybe even learn a few words in the language. Planning on a lot of shopping while you're there? Then investigate current customs regulations prior to trip planning. [ ] Start making a list of important phone numbers to keep with you at all times. US Consulates and Embassies in the part(s) of China you'll be traveling. Include phones numbers of each of your credit cards and travelers' check companies. Keep all account and check numbers in a safe place. Include numbers of your health provider, emergency contacts, and destinations. Also include any insurance policy numbers and phone numbers. [ ] Do I need cash, credit or checks? Use credit cards for major purchases (hotel, car rental, restaurants, etc.). Carry enough foreign currency to cover immediate cash needs for transportation and tipping. Convert travelers' checks as-needed. Banks usually give the best exchange rates. Buy a device to safely carry your cash (zippered pouch to wear under your clothes, money belt, ankle or neck safe). Wear your deivce at home for comfort first. [ ] You'll need a China visa in your passport from one of the Chinese embassies in the US. Allow at least four business days for processing. Download visa form here. [ ] If you haven't given any thought to what you're going to pack, you'll want to get started. Start first by determining the number of bags allowed per person and the weight restrictions.
